My own dog may not be a pure daschund but it exhibited the physical characteristics of a sausage dog. Its body was long, and its four legs were short and stubby. The tail was long and its snout was sharp and pointed. What I liked about my dog was its broad chest. I imagined that during the early days of this dog breed, it was running alongside its master on his horse and the dog would be trotting along easily because of the big lungs it has. The dog would be used for hunting foxes and hares.
What I was warned about was the back bone or spine of the sausage dog. The spine can get injured if the weight of the dog is too heavy. The dog must not be overweight. The dog needs exercise and I must regularly exercise the dog. It doesn't mind walking on a leash but I have trouble jogging with the dog. Instead of me leading the dog, the dog begins to lead me. For this reason, I like to carry a small long cane to tap its front leg each time it runs too fast. I also speak the word, "Slow" each time I tap its front leg.
Jogging with the dog can be hazardous. It likes to crisscross my path and the leash can block my way. I have to train the dog to jog and walk only on one side of me. I prefer the right hand side because I am right-handed. I use the cane to tap the left hind leg to make it keep to my right hand side. It took a long time for me to get the dog to keep to my right hand side. The cane was my talking "weapon." Each time it felt the cane, it would move to my right side. After a while, we got comfortable with the position and I rarely had problems after that. I was able to leave my cane at home.
